Asbestos Management
The Queensland Government is committed to managing and controlling asbestos containing material in government controlled buildings to protect the health and well-being of workers, contractors and the community.
The long term objective of the Government is for all government controlled buildings to be free of asbestos containing material. This aim will be pursued through a risk management based strategy designed to safeguard those persons who occupy, service and visit government controlled buildings, including domestic premises, from exposure to respirable asbestos fibres.
The Asbestos Management and Control Policy for Government Buildings (the Policy) was approved in July 2006 and applies to all Queensland Government departments that control government buildings which have asbestos containing material. The Policy is consistent with and supports the requirements of the Queensland Workplace Health and Safety legislation and National Codes of Practice in relation to the management, control and removal of asbestos containing material.
The Policy provides a framework and direction for a consistent approach across departments and ensures that initiatives and available funding are directed towards the achievement of the Government's long-term objective for all Government buildings to be free of asbestos containing material. In its role as the Government’s management authority on asbestos within government buildings, the Department of Public Works is providing a suite of advisory material, a central asbestos register and a range of other support services.
