Smart and Sustainable Homes
The Smart and Sustainable Homes Program is made up of the Smart Housing initiative and the Sustainable Homes Program.
Smart Housing was developed by the Department of Housing in 1999 in response to the demand for housing that better meets people's needs and responds to the Queensland climate while saving money. Smart Housing transferred to the Department of Public Works in January 2007 to merge with the Sustainable Homes Program.
The newly named Smart and Sustainable Homes Program, in a joint initiative with its partners, is designing and building smart and sustainable Homes throughout Queensland, using the Smart and Sustainable Design Objectives as the minimum criteria.
Smart and Sustainable Homes demonstrate good practice in designing, planning and building homes to make them more socially, environmentally and economically sustainable. By carefully considering the design of the house, builders and renovators can construct dwellings that perform better to their local surroundings and for their occupants.
In a smart and sustainable home you will be able to move around more easily, feel safer, save money, help the environment and live in your home through all stages of your life.
