Resources/Research

The Department of Public Works, along with government, industry and the community, is working towards a healthier and ecologically sustainable built environment.

In achieving this, the Department of Public Works has conducted a number of research projects that specifically focus on emerging issues affecting the built environment. This research includes partnering with the Cooperative Research Centre for Construction Innovation in areas such as business and industry Development, sustainable built assets and the delivery and management of built assets.

In addition, a range of guidelines and educational resources have been produced to assist other government departments and the general public on understanding the challenges faced in an ecologically sustainable built environment.

Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Construction Innovation / Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre

The Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Construction Innovation was established on 1 July 2001 and formally ended on 31 December 2009 after some eight and half years of operation. Over this period the CRC for Construction Innovation has been a world-class research flagship for the Australian building and construction industry, with the Department of Public Works having been a partner from the outset.

Seed funding for a new centre, the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre, has been secured for the 2009-2010 financial year, ensuring that applied research support for the building and construction industry is maintained as a transition is made from the CRC to the new Sustainable Built Environment Centre.

Performance of various window glazing treatments

This study looks at the performance of five different window glazing products in a sub-tropical environment in regard to their heat rejecting or insulating properties. The study was carried out using the Department of Housing’s research house in Rockhampton and provides a real field comparison of the performances of different commercially available glass types.
