Energy Management

The Queensland Government has made a commitment to play its part in meeting a national greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 60% by 2050.  This commitment is evidenced through its initiative ClimateSmart 2050 – Queensland climate change strategy 2007: a low carbon future – which in part aims to address climate change through a range of policies and reforms.

Strategic Energy Efficiency Policy for Queensland Government Buildings

The Strategic Energy Efficiency Policy for Queensland Government Buildings addresses reduction of energy consumption and increased energy efficiency in Queensland Government buildings.  It contains an energy efficiency strategy which includes specific reduction targets for energy consumption in these buildings.   A key element of the Policy is the requirement for each department to develop and implement a 'Strategic Energy Management Plan' for its building portfolio.

The Department of Public Works is the nominated management authority for the Policy.  This Policy establishes minimum energy consumption reduction targets of 5% by 2010 and 20% by 2015 for individual government departments.  The Department is responsible, through the Government's 'Energy Smart Buildings Program', for providing assistance and advice, including the establishment of a central register, to assist government departments to monitor and record their electricity consumption.  Annual reporting by the Department to Executive Government on the progress of individual government departments to achieving these energy reduction targets is scheduled to commence in December 2009.

Carbon Reduction Strategy for Government Office Buildings

The Department of Public Works has already played a key part in reducing energy consumption in government buildings and will play a leading role to make government-owned office buildings "carbon-neutral" by 2020.  That is, zero net greenhouse emissions.  It is important to note that implementation of the Strategic Energy Efficiency Policy for Government Buildings is a crucial first step towards achieving carbon neutrality and the reduction in energy consumption, and therefore provides a platform for the closely linked Carbon Reduction Strategy for Government Office Buildings.
