Dandiiri Contact Centre

Dandiiri Contact Centre

Dandiiri Contact Centre

Queensland’s most ecologically-sustainable government office complex, the Dandiiri Contact Centre, was officially opened on 1 December 2010 by the former Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten.

The $47.4 million Dandiiri Contact Centre was awarded a 6 star Green Star Office Design v2 rating from the Green Building Council of Australia in recognition of its ecologically sustainable specifications in November 2009. At that time this was the highest Green Star design rating ever given to an office building in Australia and represents ‘World Leadership’ in sustainable design.

The building has three floors of office accommodation and supporting facilities, such as training rooms and meeting rooms, and features numerous eco-friendly measures that include:

Additional photovoltaic cells will be incorporated into the building by June 2011 allowing enough solar energy to be generated to offset the energy used in the building and effectively reduce the building’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero.

Designed and project managed by Project Services under the direction of the Accommodation Office the Dandiiri Contact Centre, located at Cambewarra Street, Zillmere, is a state of the art 24/7 call centre housing more than 400 Queensland Police Service and Smart Service Queensland employees.

William McCormack Place Stage 2

William McCormack Place Stage 2

Completed in September 2010 Cairns' newest and greenest office building, the $79.5 million William McCormack Place Stage 2 has set new standards as a ‘World Leader’ in green building design, tenant comfort and sustainable development. Located in Sheridan Street in the Cairns’ CBD, adjacent to the existing Stage 1 building, the nine storey William McCormack Place Stage 2 provides 9400m² of Grade A office accommodation for various government departments.

Designed by Cox Rayner Architects and constructed by Laing O'Rourke, William McCormack Place Stage 2 is the first Australian building to be awarded a 6 star Green Star Office Design v2 rating in a regional, tropical area. The building also earned a High Commendation at the Engineers Australia Cairns Region Engineering Excellence Awards 2010.

The siting, envelope, structure and services work together to achieve world-leading sustainability outcomes with a number of energy efficient measures that include:

Energy-saving initiatives included in William McCormack Place Stage 2 are expected to deliver cost savings of approximately $450 000 per year. Specific sustainability outcomes* include a 60% (1000 tonnes/y) reduction in CO²emissions, 40% reduction in whole-building demand on the electricity grid, and a 75% (17ML/y) reduction in potable water use (*compared to a median 2.5 Star building).

Thursday Island Government Office Building

Thursday Island Government Office Building

With occupancy from March 2011 the new Thursday Island Government Office Building has provided government agencies with much needed accommodation to support their continued provision of important services to the local community. The building provides approximately 1100m2 of office space to support about 80 staff from Department of Communities, Queensland Community Safety, Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation and the Department of Justice and Attorney General.

The building has incorporated low energy design, including the post construction installation of photovoltaic cells on the roof which will result in long term energy savings and reduce the load on the Island’s diesel powered generator system. The project created 90 full time equivalent jobs throughout the construction process with apprentices and local indigenous workers involved in line with the local industry participation plan.

The design of the building has incorporated the local traditions and culture of the Thursday Island community through use of the works of local artists in the building’s carpet design and glazing treatments. During the construction period streetscape improvements were also delivered with the provision of footpaths, drainage and additional car parking.
